There has been no news since July 2010.

Maybe have that tab link directly to the Announcements forum.

no no no...

that's a rule of website design... never make content just to fit a website design. Design the website to fit content. If there is no News, or News is going elsewhere (like Announcements), get rid of the News tab. Less clutter = Good.
